Willard Sledge III

November 15, 1937 — April 9, 2014

Willard M. Sledge III, 76, of Woodway, passed away Wednesday evening April 9th after a nine month illness. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, the 14th of April at Grace Gardens Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Durham officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the parlor at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Drive.

Willard was born November 15, 1937 in High Point, North Carolina to Annie Lee and Willard “Bill” M. Sledge Jr. He grew up in Enfield, North Carolina and later moved with his family to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he graduated from high school. The family then moved to Lubbock where at the age of 18, Willard joined the United States Army.

He met and married Pat Sledge in 1965 and they were married in Lubbock. They moved to Waco with the Veterans Administration Regional Office, where he held many positions in his 37 years of serving veterans and lastly served as a Management Analysis in the Directors Office. Willard received many Outstanding Awards while working at the Veterans Administration. After his retirement from the V.A., he worked as a residential appraiser for a number of years.

Willard and Pat traveled in the RV after retirement, visiting Colorado and the Texas Gulf Coast. He was a loving husband, father and grandpa and will be lovingly missed. He was a long time member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church of Waco and a Mason, just recently receiving his 50 year pin.

Willard is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Karen and husband, Donald Eskew of China Spring; son, Steven Sledge and wife, Emily; grandsons, Mason and Dylan Sledge all of Chesterfield, Missouri; sisters, Pat McCoy and Barbara Fowler and husband, Bill; and many nieces and nephews.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, 1300 Columbus Avenue Waco, TX 76701

The Sledge family would like to thank the nurses and aides at Wesley Woods Healthcare Center and Providence Hospice for their care in his last months.
