Thelma Smith Newberry went to her heavenly home July 7, 2017 at the age of 88. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday, July 11, 2017 in the Grace Gardens Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Brother Terry Graham will officiate. A visitation with the family will be 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Monday, July 10, 2017 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home.
Mrs. Newberry was born December 8, 1928 in Little Elmo, Texas to Irie and Jimmie Smith. Thelma married the love of her life, Douglas Newberry, January 4, 1947 at Waco’s Seventh and James Baptist Church. Together they served at First Baptist Woodway since 1961. Thelma enjoyed working as an administrative assistant for the Camp Fire Girls, and retired after 25 years.
Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters; Mildred Crouch, Lourene Hendrix, Iris Faye Hataway, and a brother, James Smith.
Mrs. Newberry will be greatly missed by her loving husband of 70 years, Douglas; son Keith Newberry and wife, Linda, of Huffman, Texas; daughter Linda Stone of Hewitt; grandchildren: Shelia and Jeff Griffith, Shelly and David Kasper, Stephanie and Mike Walsh, Donna and Edward Shaw, Carolyn and Mark Wachsmann, Brenda and Brent Skeen; a twin sister, Velma Adamson, from Colorado Springs; and great-grandchildren: Cory, Cadee, and Carle Griffith, Wyatt and Laney Kasper, Aidan and Callum Walsh, Blake and Jonathan Shaw, Andy, Emma, and Kara Wachsmann, Breanna, Braden, and Bradley Skeen, and a great-great granddaughter, Aubrey Shaw.
The family asks that in Lieu of flowers, you make memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
