Sammie Lee Smith, a beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on September 6, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on December 16, 1939, Sammie's life was a tapestry woven with threads of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family. A celebration of her life will be from 10 am -12 pm, Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home in Woodway.
Sammie was born in Blooming Grove, Texas to CF and Ora May Smith. The family later moved to Waco where Sammie entered Dean Highland Elementary as a pig-tailed tomboy. She later attended North Jr. Highschool and then graduated from the original Waco High School in 1957.
Sammie’s lifelong passion for sports began during her formative years on the tennis team, where her competitive spirit flourished and friendships blossomed. This dedication to sports remained a constant in her life, leading her to join a bowling league where she forged new bonds while celebrating her love for adventure. Her adventurous nature extended beyond sports, as she traveled the world, immersing herself in new towns and cultures, bringing back delightful stories that captivated all who were fortunate enough to hear them.
Through the years, Sammie built enduring friendships that became an integral part of her life. Her treasured “Tiger Tuesday” gatherings, where she would meet with her school friends for a warm cup of coffee and shared laughter, remained a cherished tradition until her last days. These moments were a testament to her loyalty and the connection she maintained with those who mattered most to her.
At her home, Sammie surrounded herself with wonderful ladies who became like family, and she greatly valued the joy and companionship they brought into her life. Social media played a role in keeping her connected with old friends, allowing her to keep her relationships alive and vibrant. Her sharp mind and quick wit were evident in her love for crossword puzzles, a pastime that kept her intellectually engaged and ready for every new challenge that came her way.
Sammie's career in banking began at the Mercantile Bank in Dallas, where she distinguished herself as a senior loan officer. Her commitment to her work and her clients led her to become the vice president of Allen Bank in Allen, Texas. Through her years in the banking sector, she not only contributed to the financial well-being of individuals but also fostered meaningful relationships with those around her. After many years of dedicated service, Sammie chose to retire from banking and embark on a new journey. She opened a landscaping business in the Dallas area alongside her dear friend and business partner, Billie Caldwell. Together, they continued to nurture their community, using the same passion and care that had defined Sammie's career.
Though she never married and did not have children of her own, Sammie found her greatest joy in her nieces and nephews, whom she cherished deeply. Her spirit shined brightly in their lives, filling the voids of motherhood with her boundless love and support. She dedicated her heart to nurturing them, lending a listening ear, and sharing her wisdom and warmth. To her, they were her world, and she embraced her role in their lives with enthusiasm and grace. Throughout her life, Sammie demonstrated an unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and her cherished furry companion, Mollie. For seventeen enriching years, Mollie was not just a pet; she was a confidante and a source of joy, mirroring the nurturing spirit that Sammie extended to all creatures and people alike.
