Sallie Jessie Hurst, 90, of McGregor, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 6 at the First Baptist Church of McGregor. Interment will follow at McGregor Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the services at First Baptist Church.
Sallie was born September 20, 1924 in Kilgore to "Bear" Lewis and Lillie Belle (Turner) Horton. She married James "Jim" Hurst on Dec. 21, 1946 in Kilgore. In 1953, the couple moved to McGregor where they raised their 3 children.
Sallie attended and received her Bachelor of Education from Mary Hardin Baylor. She continued her schooling and earned her Master's degree in Education from Texas A&M University. Sallie taught school for 25 years in McGregor.
Sallie was always involved with her children and community. She was a Den Mother in Cub Scouts as well as a scout leader in Girl Scouts. She was a volunteer at Providence Hospital, the McGregor Library, a member of the Garden Club, and an active member of First Baptist Church in McGregor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Hurst, her parents, and two sisters.
Sallie is survived by her sons, James "Jim" Hurst of Palm Springs, CA and William "Bill" Hurst and wife, Isabel, of Georgetown; daughter, Judy Pegues and husband, Tommy, of Midlothian; three grandchildren, Nicole, Russell, and Marc Hurst.
