Graveside Memorial services for Robert L. Reid will be on April 16, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at Oakwood Cemetery with Dr. Robert Baird officiating. Visitation will be at Grace Gardens Funeral Home on Thursday, April 15, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 P. M.
Robert was born in El Paso to Robert Lynn Reid and Lillian O’Bryan Reid. Robert graduated from Austin High School in 1939 and he received a B.A. in History from UTEP after serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He received his M.A. degree from Baylor in 1947 and did graduate work at Brown and Oxford Universities.
Professor Reid began his teaching career at Baylor in the History Department in 1948. He served as the Chairman of the History Department from 1977 to 1992, when he retired from full-time instruction. He received numerous awards for outstanding service and teaching; he was one of the first Baylor Faculty designated as “Master Teacher”. In 1997, Baylor University awarded Professor Emeritus Robert Reid an honorary doctorate degree and designation as “Baylor Historian Extraordinaire.”
He had many interests during his full life including, his love of history, Shakespeare, music and travel. Beginning in 1973 he served as advisor to the Baylor Chamber of Commerce, Baylor’s oldest service organization.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved twin sister, Mary Lillian Reid Collingwood and a nephew William Lynn Collingwood.
He is survived by his godchildren: Kathryn Alayne Hollis and Robert Reid Hollis; close friends: Carolyn Tanner of Saratoga, Ca., Dale and Caren Hollis, Vince Clark, Clint Patterson all of Waco and over 20,000 former students.
