Robert Darryl Hanson, 71, passed away on March 26, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loved ones after a brief but courageous battle with leukemia.
Bob was born August 29, 1951 in San Antonio, Texas to Virginia Vickrey and Forbes Hanson. Growing up as a military brat, he moved all over the country and settled in Austin, Texas at age 16, graduating from Reagan High School in 1969. After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Michele “Shelley” Hendricks and had his two children, Robert and Kristen.
Bob joined the army national guard in 1971 and served in the DMZ in Korea and at White Sands Missile Range as a military police officer until 1975, about which he always had a story to tell. At his ten-year high school reunion, Bob won the “most jobs” award, having tried selling Christmas trees, shrimp fishing, traveling ice machine repair for Chelsea Street Pub and sacking groceries at Bergstrom Air Force base. He went on to get his master's license in AC and refrigeration, then ran his own successful company, Summer Breeze Heating and Air Conditioning for 35 years.
He loved fishing, working on and cruising in his various boats, and was insatiably curious about the human brain, spending much time researching hypnosis (he even became a certified hypnotherapist) and reading about and discussing artificial intelligence, which he wrote a sci-fi novel and many short stories about. He was an avid nature lover and kayaker. If you were a friend of Bob’s you’d be sure to get treated to lots of lunches at Threadgill’s on Lamar Blvd. Bob claimed to be a minor expert in every topic, and was happy to always give helpful advice (whether you wanted it or not)!
Bob was preceded in death by his mother Virginia Aldridge, father Forbes Hanson, and sister Sharon Hanson.
Survivors include his wife, Michele Hanson, son Robert Hanson, daughter Kristen Muir (Gordon), and his grandson, Charlie Muir, to whom he loved being GrandBob, his brothers, Chris and Mike Hanson and his siblings Cindy and James Salter.
He will be cremated followed by a celebration of life in the near future. The family will spread Bob's ashes in a private ceremony along the Texas coast per his request. The waters there held a special place in his heart.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Baylor Scott and White Hospice and the nurses at BSW cancer center.
