Richard Chastain, MD, age 87 of Waco, formerly of Amarillo, passed away Wednesday September 8, 2010 at his residence with his family by his side. Funeral Services will be 3PM Saturday at Llano Cemetery Chapel in Amarillo, Texas. Visitation will be Monday September 13, 2010 from 6 to 8PM at Grace Gardens Funeral Home in Waco, Texas.
Richard was born October 10, 1922 in Coudersport, PA to Louis and Laura Chastain. He graduated from Coudersport High School. He attended Penn State University and was then accepted in the Army’s Specialized Training Program (ASTP). After completing his pre-med at the University of New Hampshire, he was sent to medical school at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. After graduation in 1947 he interned in New York City. 1948 to 1951 he took his specialty training in Ophthalmology at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. The next year was spent as the Ophthalmologist at Northwest Clinic, Minot, ND. In 1952 he enlisted in the Navy and served as an Ophthalmologist at Pensacola Naval Air Base. While serving at Pensacola he contracted Polio. He was discharged from the veterans hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 1954. After working a short time in Daytona Beach, Florida he moved to Amarillo and started his office practice in 1955. He retired in 1983. He loved heading north in his Bluebird. In addition to traveling he enjoyed the outdoors at Custer, SD and Glenburn, ND, and especially Quebec, Canada. He was preceded in death by a brother Rupert Chastain
Richard is survived by his wife Elaine of 63 years; a son David L. Chastain MD of Amarillo; a daughter Sandra and her husband Gary Williams DDS of Waco; half sister Carol Elaine Barnes; step-mother Dorothy Chastain; a niece Dania Chastain-Strasburg, PHD, nephew Dan Chastain; six grandchildren Dave, Shalene, Kevin, Timaree, Brian, and Leah; and three great grandchildren Alayna, Silas and Julian. The family wishes to acknowledge Bluebonnet Hospice and Phoenix Home Care for their tender loving care.
