Ona Lange of McGregor passed from this life and into the arms of her Lord and Savior at the age of 97 on May 8, 2021. Mrs. Lange resided at St. Anthony Care Center. The funeral service will be at Zion Lutheran Church in McGregor, Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 2:00 pm, the Reverend Bill Sappenfield officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm before the service in the church sanctuary. Interment will be at St. Paul's Cemetery in Crawford, Texas at 3:00 pm, under the direction of Grace Gardens Funeral Home.
Ona was born July 13, 1923, in Gatesville, Texas to Fred and Frieda (Niemeier) Haferkamp of Coryell City, Texas. She was received into Christ's Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on August 12, 1923, at St. John Lutheran Church in Coryell City. Following instruction in the faith, she was confirmed on March 21, 1937, at St. John Lutheran Church, Coryell City. Ona attended Osage Elementary and Gatesville High School.
In 1942, she married John J. Daniels. He was killed in WWII in 1944, leaving Ona a widow with a young daughter. On October 2, 1948, Ona married Ervin Lange at Zion Lutheran Church in McGregor, Texas. They lived on a farm in the McGregor area all their married life.
Ona was an active member of Zion Lutheran church of McGregor. She was a member of the Mary Martha Circle, was active in the fellowship program, made copies of the Sunday services and helped deliver them to homebound members for 20 years. She belonged to the quilting group and spent many hours quilting beautiful quilts for the fundraising auction for Clifton Sunset Home and Lutheran World Relief. She volunteered at the McGregor nursing home and was a member of the McGregor Garden Club.
Ona worked at Hillcrest Medical Center for 30 years as a nursing assistant in the Labor/Delivery & Nursery. She retired in 2001. Ona loved the simple life. She worked with her hands and loved cooking, quilting, crocheting, and taking care of her family. She also loved to play dominos, especially 84.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter and son-in-law, Joanne (Daniels) Witschorke and James Witschorke, brother and sister-in-law, Edgar and Lorena Haferkamp, step-grandchild, Justin Mertz, and step-great-grandchild, Hannah Claire Mertz.
Ona is survived by children, Mary Lee Mertz (Bobby) of Brenham, and Alan Lange of McGregor, grandchildren, Sheryl Witschorke of Austin and Stephen Witschorke (Allison) of La Vernia, Texas, great- grandchild, Seth Witschorke, step-grandchildren, Ron Mertz (Rebecca) of Brenham, Scot Mertz (Jeni) of Brenham, and Dana Edge of Grapevine, eight step-great grandchildren, one step-great, great grandchild, and sister-in-laws, Leona Hendrickson, Viola Mize, Vivian Lange and numerous nieces.
Pallbearers are Stephen Witschorke, Seth Witschorke, Ron Mertz, Scot Mertz, Mike Dietzman, Charlie Guerrero. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Haferkamp and Charles Rohloff.
The family has designated Zion Lutheran Church in McGregor or Providence Hospice for memorials.
