Norman Smith

Norman Allen Smith age 92, of Waco passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at a local nursing facility. Funeral services will be 1 P.M. Monday, June 6, 2011 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. Brother Jim Gray of First Baptist Woodway will officiate. Interment will follow in Smith Cemetery at School Creek in Lampasas County.

Norman was born June 25, 1918, in Lampasas County to Allen and Ruth Smith. He married Beverly Hammack of Coryell County on January 29, 1938. They lived and worked on his father's ranch for awhile, then moved to Lampasas. He worked with contractors building military installations in Texas and later for U.S. Civil Service at Kelly Field in San Antonio. While there he volunteered for service at Panama Air Depot in Panama. He was a machinist and milled parts that kept U.S. war planes in the air.

Norman decided to join the U.S. Army, so he and Beverly returned to Texas where he enlisted at San Antonio. He was serving at Fort Bliss, Texas, when the war in the Pacific ended. After his service he worked at Kelly Field, then Fort Hood where he ended his career of 39 years with Civil Service.

He was preceded in death by a son, Joe Taylor Smith.

A member of First Baptist Woodway, Norman is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughters, Kathy Paddock and husband Ed of Waco, and Bette Smith of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Katherine Lackey and husband Lyle of Fort Worth, Julie Grayson and husband Rusty of Dallas, and Kelly Stevens and husband Chris of Andover, Massachusetts; great-granddaughters, Kate, Mia, and Allie Grayson, Elizabeth Lackey, and Georgia Stevens.
