Nelda Weldon

January 26, 1938 — April 8, 2015

Nelda Irene Roberts Weldon went peacefully to be with her Savior and Lord Jesus on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 after a lengthy battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Nelda’s life was a testimony of her deep faith and love for her family and friends. A celebration of her life will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2015, at Brazos Meadows Baptist Church 625 Hewitt Dr, Hewitt. Visitation with the family will be 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Drive.

Born in Muldoon, Texas, to Elton and Vera Roberts on January 26, 1938, Nelda grew up in Friendswood, Texas and graduated as valedictorian from Friendswood High School, where she was a cheerleader and member of the band. She then earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Corpus Christi, where she met her husband, Ken. They were married on May 31, 1957--the first wedding at the newly established First Baptist Church of Friendswood. After spending 14 years in Corpus Christi, Nelda and Ken moved their family to Waco, Texas, where they have made their home since 1971.

Nelda spent 22 years in elementary classrooms at Midway ISD, where she lived out her passion for helping children learn to read. She and Ken were active leaders at First Baptist Woodway and later helped First Woodway to plant Brazos Meadows Baptist Church. They served as dedicated leaders in missions programs and sought ways to share their faith both at home and overseas. The Weldons also shared a love for reaching out to international students at Baylor University, often inviting them into their home to share hospitality and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Nelda’s generous spirit and desire to help those around her will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Royce Roberts and wife Barbara, and Wade Roberts.

Nelda is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 58 years, Kenneth Ray Weldon; children, Wyndell Weldon and his wife, Yonie, of Bastrop, Texas, Jan Weldon Roberts and her husband, Tim, of Tyler, Texas, and Brent Weldon and his wife, Lena, of Clute, Texas; sister-in-law, Beverly Bowling Roberts, of Euless, Texas; grandchildren, Hannah Beth Roberts, Chloe Roberts, Ginger Weldon, Graham Weldon, Gideon Weldon, and Grace Weldon; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews and their families, whom she loved.

If friends or family so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Brazos Meadows Baptist Church or to Bluebonnet Hospice Care.
