Mildred "Mickie" (Young) Uzzel

June 18, 1926 — July 7, 2021

Waco, Texas

Mildred Marie "Mickie" Uzzel Passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2021, in Arlington, Texas. A memorial visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, July 13, 2021, in the Chapel of Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Dr.  The memorial service will immediately follow at 7 P.M. in the chapel with Rev. Marianne Brown-Trigg officiating.

Mildred Marie Uzzel was the second of seven children born to Emmett Earl and Lizzie Maria (Stover) Young in Mart, Texas on June 18, 1926.  Known throughout her life as Mickie, she grew up in Waco and attended Waco schools.  While a young teen, she could never have guessed as she picked cotton that she would soon be a world traveler.

On June 25, 1945 she married the love of her life, Norris Hampton Uzzel, after a whirlwind three-week courtship. After WW II, the U.S Army deployed Norris (& Mickie) to Colorado Springs...before moving to Japan...then on to Nashville, Tennessee.  They also enjoyed living in Germany and traveling throughout Europe; then a move to Longview, Texas and back to Waco upon Major Uzzel’s retirement.  Along the way, they had four children.

She was widowed in 1968.  For many years, Mickie was a fixture in the gift wrap department at Cox’s Department Store where she positively loved interacting with customers while honing her artistic side.  Later she taught preschool for 20 years at First Baptist Day School; her dedication to and love for those children was truly a calling.

Above all else, Mickie spent her whole heart loving her children and grandchildren...an unconditional love...always with unwavering support...she was sweet...she was kind...she was positive...she was our beloved Granny.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norris, daughter Deborah, granddaughter Krystle, brother Bill Young and sisters Clara Larsen, Helen Davis and Patsy Urban.

Left to cherish her memory are sons Norris Hampton Uzzel Jr of Waco and Jon Patrick Uzzel of Madison, WI, daughter Susan Elaine McConnell (Jim) of Arlington, TX, sisters Mary Wilson of Waco and Linda Sutton of Spring Branch, TX, 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

For those desiring, the family has suggested memorials may be made in Mickie’s name to the children’s charity of your choice.
