Michael "Mike" Poss

James Michael (Mike) Poss, a longtime McGregor native, passed away Thursday evening, February 23, 2023, at the age of 90. Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 pm Saturday, March 4, 2023, in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church, 500 S. Madison St. McGregor. The memorial service will follow at 2 pm in the sanctuary with Rev. Victoria Gebert officiating. For those unable to attend, the service will be streamed at www.gracegardensfh.com.

Mike was born November 27, 1932, in McGregor, Texas, the son of the late James Denson and Ethel White (Jackson) Poss.  He grew up in McGregor, went to McGregor schools, and graduated from McGregor High School. He attended Baylor University in Waco then served in the U.S. Army from June 1954 to June 1956. He was stationed at Fort Story in Virginia Beach, VA. While in the Army, Mike was introduced to Mattie Arlene Drinkard from Appomattox, VA by Army buddy Pete Slade, who was dating Arlene’s cousin Gale Drinkard. Mike and Arlene were married on August 24, 1956 at First United Methodist church in McGregor, TX, living in McGregor their entire married life (with many trips to Virginia).

Mike managed the Gulf Oil Fuel Distribution business in McGregor serving local businesses and area farmers. He later operated the Gulf Distribution business in Gatesville.  The First United Methodist of McGregor has always been an important part of his life, and he was an active member for many years.  He loved family gatherings and had a passion for car racing from an early age. Many Friday nights were spent at Heart of Texas speedway and Sundays watching Nascar on TV.

Survived by his wife Arlene Drinkard Poss, and sons James (Jay) Martin Poss (wife Jan Polston) of Leonard, TX and Richard Allen Poss (wife Kristine Theodorsen) of Longview, TX. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Jessica Schnitker, Jerod Poss, Natalie Tenorio, and Danielle Poss as well as three great-grandchildren, Landon and Logan Schnitker, and Tanner Poss.
