Michael James Leatherwood

Michael James Leatherwood passed away into the arms of Jesus at Providence Hospice Place on June 1, 2023.

Visitation will be from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, Monday, June 5, 2023, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. A second visitation will be 12:00pm to 2:00pm, Tuesday, June 6 at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be at 2:00pm, June 6, 2023, with Dr. Charles Higgs and Rev. Larry Zabcik officiating. The burial will be at Hillcrest Garden of Memory, west of Hillsboro.

Mike was born to James Powell and Gladys Louise Leatherwood in Corpus Christi, Tx. Mike grew up in Hillsboro and attended Hillsboro schools, graduating class of 1962. He was active in the band and played trumpet. He attended the University of Texas on lab band scholarship. He later attended Hill College and played in their band. He played trumpet professionally before starting his own car dealership as one of the youngest dealers in the state of Texas in 1963. A business that would span 40 years before retiring in 2004. Lots of amazing friends and memories were made in those 40 years of business. Mike enjoyed his Facebook friends and being able to keep in touch with loved ones old and new.

Bored with retirement he returned to the car business as used car manager at Cole Ford Sales, before returning to retirement in 2009. He enjoyed going to the coast and spending time in Rockport. He enjoyed his hobby of ranching and raising cattle as well as his collection of classic cars.

Mike married Karen Jones Leatherwood on April 22, 1972, married for 51 years. Mike loved Jesus and was a faithful member of Woodway United Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents James and Louise Leatherwood, and daughters Keri Suzanne and Kristen Nicole Leatherwood.

He is survived by his wife Karen Leatherwood, sisters Marilyn Sanders and Lana Crow, stepson John Graham and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many special friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Texas Oncology and Providence Hospice staff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution can be made to Providence Hospice 6700 American Plaza Pkwy, Waco, TX 76712.
