Michael Weems Guyer, 59, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2012, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Victorious Life Church in Waco on Monday November 26 at 2 pm. Visitation will be held on Sunday November 25 from 5-7 pm at Grace Gardens in Waco.
Michael was born on July 2, 1953 in Galveston, Texas to Betty and Irvin Guyer. The family moved to Austin, Texas in 1960, then to Waco in 1966. Michael graduated from Richfield High School in 1971. After a couple of years of study at McLennan Community College in Waco, he attended the University of Texas in Austin where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Zoology. He was the owner/operator of ICS Telephones in Waco for twenty years.
Many of Michael's friendships began back in those high school and college days. Friends characterize Michael as being loyal, warm, unique, "laid-back" and very "real". He loved life and had an adventurous spirit. Some of his favorite pastimes were traveling, motorcycle riding (always a Harley), scuba diving, snow skiing and sailing. He once joyfully jumped out of a perfectly good airplane to sky dive and when he drove a race car at Texas Motor Speedway, he passed every car in his heat.
After being inspired by an air show exhibition in the late 1990s, Michael and his father undertook an ambitious, two-year project. Beginning with the tail section in his parents' upstairs bedroom, then moving to their tiny garage, and finally to an airplane hangar, they built a Van's RV-6 experimental (home-built) aircraft. The father-son duo was tenacious and hard-working and produced a gorgeous flying machine. Michael spent many happy hours sailing high above the Texas countryside.
Michael was a devoted and loving husband and "Papa" who enjoyed spending quiet times with his wife, Lenesa, and not-so-quiet times with his precious grandson, Christian.
Michael and his wife enjoyed numerous trips in their short time together. Playa Del Carmen, Mexico was a favorite destination, and the highlight of their Hawaiian honeymoon was two powered paraglider flights where they soared above the spectacular island of Kauai.
Michael's quick, intelligent sense of humor, movie-star smile, kindness and honesty were impressive, but he was down-to-earth and truly humble with a quiet self-confidence.
It was inspiring to watch Michael's matter-of-fact optimism throughout his cancer treatment. His fearless, uncomplaining attitude was simply amazing.
Michael is preceded in death by his father, Irvin Guyer and Grandparents Franklin "Papa" Weems Guyer and Evelyn Guyer.
He is survived by his wife, Lenesa Guyer of Waco; Mother, Betty Guyer of Waco; Sister Karen Maguire and husband Brian of Hewitt;
Sister Barbara Naegler and husband Max of Mounds, Oklahoma; Nephews J.B. Maguire of Houston and Sean Maguire of Hewitt; Grandson Christian Quetz of Hewitt, and many other dear family members and friends.
Much sincere gratitude goes to family and friends and Scott and White Hospice staff who supported Michael and his wife with real and substantial gifts of their time and effort during his illness and treatment. And many thanks to our wonderful, loving God who infused Michael and Lenesa with truly awesome peace and comfort during their last precious days together.
