Margaret Meadows

September 10, 1941 — February 27, 2016

Margaret Ellen (Tyer) Meadows, beloved daughter, mother, wife, grandmother and Christian, passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 27, 2016, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was 74. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Drive. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday March 3, 2016, at First Baptist Church of Waco, 500 Webster, with Rev. Dr. Matt Snowden officiating. Private inurnment will be in Crawford Cemetery.

Margaret was born September 10, 1941, in Houston, Texas, the daughter of the late Paul Arthur and Florence Louise (Sink) Tyer. In 1959, she graduated from Spring Branch High School and continued her education at Baylor University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1963. While at Baylor, she was a member of Kappa Theta/Tri-Delta Sorority. Margaret earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Hardin Simmons University in 1983.

After college, Margaret moved to Garland, Texas to teach fourth grade. In Garland, she met Joe Norman Meadows, from McGregor, who would later become her husband. They were married on June 18, 1966 in Spring Branch, Texas. This year, they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Margaret was a member of the Tri-Delta Alumnae Association where she served as the Baylor Tri-Delta Beta Tau Chapter Alumnae Advisor and was on the Beta Tau House Corporation. She served on PTAs in Spring Branch, Abilene and Woodway; she also served on the Waco Symphony Council Board and on the Board of Historic Waco Foundation’s East Terrace house. While in Abilene, she was a Cub Scout den leader and volunteered with the Senior Ministry as a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

Margaret had a heart for Children’s Ministry. She was involved in the children’s Division at Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston, First Baptist Church in Abilene and First Baptist Church in Waco. A member of FBC Waco since 1984, she served as the Children’s Ministry Division Director, was on the Stephen Ministry Team and was a Deacon.

Margaret was creative, fun-loving and a skilled writer. She was famous for the inventive and elaborate birthday parties she threw her children. She loved the beach and her family and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Joe Meadows of Woodway, who was Margaret’s caregiver until her death; a son, Mark Meadows and wife Holly of Rockwall; a daughter, Meredith Harris and husband Chris of Hewitt; a sister, Pauline Tyer of Iowa City, Iowa; granddaughter Jaimee Harris of Austin; grandsons, Robert Harris and Michael Harris of Hewitt; granddaughter, Madison Meadows of Rockwall; brother-in-laws, Doug Meadows and wife Mary of Abilene, Ray Meadows and wife Becky of Waco; former sister-in-law, Fran McIver; cousins Jimmy Cannon and Mary Lou Cannon Wade; nephews and nieces, Kent Meadows, Shaun Zitting, Angie Shoaf, Mindy Meadows, Al Meadows, Sarah Perez and their families.

The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to Krystal Price and Dwan Taylor from Bluebonnet Hospice and to Paula Ripley from Visiting Angels who was a true angel to our family.
