Margaret Becker

April 5, 1950 — November 20, 2013

Margaret “Maggie” Clara Becker passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Visitation and Rosary services will be held at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, Service will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption, Father Joe officiating and Burial at Oakwood Cemetery

Maggie was born April 5, 1950, the first “honeymoon” Child of George Adam Becker and Barbara Ellen Jackson in Dallas, Texas. Maggie was four years old when her family moved to Temple, Texas where George owned and operated his business; Becker’s Radiator Service, Inc. Maggie attended St. Mary's Catholic School, Travis Junior High School, and Temple High School. Maggie graduated from Reicher Catholic High School in 1968.

In Maggie’s youth years, she was active in Girl Scouts and a candy stripe volunteer (at Olin E. Teague Veteran’s Administration Hospital). Maggie also worked as a lifeguard, Curry Office Supply and Holiday Inn.

Maggie started her law enforcement career in Woodway on July 28, 1975, when females rarely entered law enforcement. Maggie was the first female ever hired by Woodway Public Safety Department. She started as a patrol officer, quickly rising through the ranks. She served in many roles in the department, promoting to Sergeant in 1981 and then serving as Lieutenant, Captain, Detective, and finally Assistant Chief until she retired in August 2001. As Assistant Chief, she oversaw day-to-day operations, personnel, training, and often filled in as chief. She was selected to and attended the FBI National Academy in 1991. Maggie served with great distinction throughout her career, always exceeding expectations and excelling. She authored the City’s first complete City of Woodway and Woodway Public Safety Department Personnel Policy and Procedure manuals. Then she personally trained every employee on them, even after her retirement in 2001 until recently when her health began to fail. She was instrumental in the hiring and training of the entire current command staff team. She was known for her loyalty, dedication, teamwork, and “tender loving care” of volunteers, sworn and non-sworn personnel alike.
She is survived by her closest friend Donna Kay Baldrige, her two sisters Barbara “Tee” Carter of Uhland, Julia Elizabeth Becker of Crofton, Maryland, her two brothers George “GD” Becker of Uhland and Thomas “Tom” Becker of Belton. Also surviving are her two nieces, her four nephews, her three great nieces, her two great nephews, her many extended family and her friends.
In lieu of flowers, Maggie’s last request is that memorial contributions may be made to Woodway Public Safety Department and St. Mary’s Catholic of the Assumption.
