It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Laurence Dailey, affectionately known as Larry, who left us at the age of 78. A visitation in Larry's honor will be at 10:00am, Saturday, April 26, 2024 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, with a Memorial Service following at 11:00am.
Born in May of 1946, in New Jersey. Larry lived a life full of patriotism, dedication, service to others, happiness, laughter and love, leaving an impression on those who knew him.
Larry's journey began in Thiells NY, a small close knit community. He was active in the local church, the school choir and in the Boy Scouts – earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He developed his love for camping in the Boy Scouts. He worked at the Boy scout summer camps each year until graduating from High School. His first job after HS was at Bear Mountain State Park, doing cleanup, firefighting, all kinds of things.
He was accepted to go to the nearby Fire Academy College when his buddy went to join the US Air Force, so he did as well. He proudly served for over 20 years, specializing as an Aircraft Electrician. He traveled the world in the Air Force and truly loved his time in the military. He achieved the distinguished rank of Master Sergeant.
His military career laid the foundation for a successful transition into civilian life, leading him to become an accomplished Aircraft Electrical Supervisor at L3, from which he retired in 2007 after dedicating 21 years of exemplary service.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Larry found joy and fulfillment in giving back to his community. He truly loved being a volunteer firefighter, serving 5 years at the Golinda VFD ( 3 as Chief), then 12 years with Hewitt VFD.
Additionally, he held deep appreciation for his time with the Boy Scouts, nurturing young minds and fostering their sense of adventure and responsibility. He was a Boy Scout leader in Troop 462, Lorena. He camped with the troop many times and did selected teachings, such as map reading, fire starting, and various things. He also served on the BSA Council Eagle Scout Selection Board for a number of years. He really enjoyed that a lot.
After retirement, he continued this spirit of volunteerism at the Getterman Wellness Center for another 12 years. He welcomed and helped new Cardiac and other types of rehab patients feel like they are part of the Getterman family and was a jokester and always kept the mood light and happy when he was there.
Described as happy, helpful, and remarkably people-smart, Larry embodied the values and morals of the 1950s. He possessed a unique, subtle sense of humor that often left one pondering long after the laughter faded.
In larger groups, he was the observant listener, known for his occasional witty remarks, while in intimate gatherings, he radiated joy and fun. Larry truly cared about others, willing to extend a helping hand to anyone in need, epitomizing kindness.
A traveler at heart, Larry explored new places, accompanied by his loving wife. Together, they shared countless memories of RV camping for over 20 years. He especially enjoyed various adventures with their camping group in the last few years. He looked forward to New Years every year! In addition, he really enjoyed going on cruises. They cruised almost all over the world, many times to Alaska.
Above all, Larry's proudest accomplishment was his steadfast love for his wife and children. Though he may not have expressed affection in the conventional sense, it was abundantly clear that John R. Dailey and Estelle Dailey Gonzalez were the light of his life.
His legacy of love lives on through Laura Dailey, his devoted wife of nearly 40 years; John R. Dailey, his son; Estelle Dailey Gonzalez, his daughter; and son-in-law Antonio Gonzalez III. He is also survived by his brother, John P. Dailey; sister, Frances Dailey; brother-in-law, Ronald Dilts; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends who all fondly remember him.
Larry is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Dailey; mother, Christie Dailey; and sister-in-law, Barbara Dailey.
As we reflect upon Larry's life, we celebrate a true patriot, a man of integrity, a pillar of his community, and a family man. He will be profoundly missed and cherished in the hearts of all who knew him.
