Melayn was preceded in death by her father, Otis Loren Griffith, and grandparents; Curtis and Lunell Williams and Jess and Ruth Griffith. She is survived by her mother, Angele Williams Griffith, sisters Lisa Reneau and Stephanie Jacobson (Michael), uncle Larry Williams (Maryann) nieces and nephews, and several grand nephews and nieces. She attended Lakewood Christian Church with her family in her early life and later, First Baptist of Waco Special Ed Class.
Melayn was born with several congenital problems of mild mental retardation, multiple vision problems that made her legally blind, and wore contact lenses from the age of 4 months. Despite these obstacles she was a happy child and never let her disabilities get in the way. She was proud to have participated in Special Olympics as a teenager.
Melayn attended Waco ISD Special Ed classes from the age of 3 and graduated from Waco High School. Over the years, she held various jobs at Heart of Texas Industries, Winn Dixie, China Coast, Pizza Hut, and others. One of her greatest accomplishments, that she was so proud of, was getting to live in her own apartment, with help from family and MHMR. Her favorite job was volunteering at Royal Manor Health Center, eventually becoming a resident there and continuing to volunteer. Melayn took on every job with enthusiasm and determination to do her best. Melayn was active in Self-Advocates for many years. She was thrilled to be employee of the month at Winn Dixie, employee of the year at a Self-Advocates Convention, and was greatly appreciated for her volunteer work at Royal Manor. Melayn loved people and had a special affinity for the elderly.
Melayn loved to go to family reunions, stay in hotels, go on vacation trips, shop at Walmart, play cards with her friends, all activities at Royal Manor, family gatherings, calling people to chat, watching shows and movies and eating out.
We especially appreciate all her friends, residents and staff, at Royal Manor and how very much they meant to her. Melayn will be missed by a multitude of people whose lives she has touched and by her family.
