Johnny Braswell

Johnny L. Braswell, Jr., 88, of Hewitt, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2015. Funeral services, with Boyd Connally officiating, will be Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Gardens Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Oakwood Cemetery to follow. A visitation will be Friday, January 9, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Grace Gardens Funeral Home.

Johnny was born October 8, 1926 in Monroe, Louisiana to Johnny L. Braswell, Sr., and Dorris Naff Braswell. He has a twin sister, Dorris Braswell Brown, and four half-sisters; Nita Gray, Dorothy Lott, Evelyn Jumper, and Kathy Reid. Three days after Johnny and Dorris were born, their mother passed away and their maternal grandparents, James Ford Naff and Mary Ann Day Naff, raised them.

Johnny graduated from Bastrop High School and later married Linda Sherrard Braswell. One year after they married, he was drafted into the army during the Korean War where he served his country in Germany and Paris, France. After returning home, Johnny managed multiple retail stores until his retirement from Sears-Roebuck. After almost 17 years of marriage, Johnny and Linda had their only child and love of their life, Deborah “Debbie” Braswell McCoy. Johnny was an active member of Calvary Baptist church in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he was Director of Christian Education, a Trustee of the Finance Committee, and Chair of the Nominating Committee. He enjoyed many hobbies, including model railroading, flying private airplanes, photography, and music. Johnny loved traveling, and took his daughter to Disney World every year from 1971 through 1982, where they loved to ride It’s A Small World together. His only grandchild, Lauren Ashley McCoy, continues that tradition for her Grandaddy whenever she visits the park.

Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, Johnny L. Braswell, Sr., and Dorris Naff Braswell; half-sister Evelyn Jumper; and former wife, Linda Sherrard Braswell.

Johnny is survived by his daughter, Debbie McCoy and granddaughter, Lauren McCoy, both of Hewitt, TX; twin sister Dorris Brown of Arkansas; nephew, Jim Brown, his wife Pat, and niece, Patricia Brown Peacock, of Arkansas; half-sisters Nita Gray of Indiana, Dorothy Lott of Kentucky, and Kathy Reid of Oregon; several great-nieces and nephews; along with friends, including Carolyn Rogers of Hewitt, TX.

Pallbearers will be Jim Brown, Dr. J.D. Kosarek, Dale Dellinger, and Larry Myers, with honorary pallbearer Bruce Byars.

The family would like to thank Dr. J.D. Kosarek and our “family” at Hillcrest Clinic Midway for the loving care that they provided to Johnny.
