John Henderson

August 10, 1942 — March 24, 2023

Waco, Texas

John Henderson passed away Friday, March 24, 2023, at the age of 80.  The memorial service will be 5:00pm Saturday, April 1, 2023, in the Chapel of Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Dr., Waco with Kara Leslie officiating. Masonic honors will be under the auspices of Waco Masonic Lodge 92 and Naval honors by the United States Navy will also be conferred.  Following the service, there will be a time to visit with the family.

J was born on August 10, 1942, in Teague and graduated from Bellaire High School and continued his education at San Jacinto Junior College where he earned an associates degree.

J proudly served in the United States Navy as a Machinist Mate Second Class (MM2). He continued his service to the community as a volunteer firefighter in Woodway, Texas.  J was also generous with his time volunteering with the Lighthouse Charity Team in Houston. He was also proud to achieve the title of Master Mason with C.F. Spencer #1384 Masonic Lodge in Pearland, TX. He currently was a member of Waco 92 Lodge.

J loved his family, extended family, and friends. He was the proudest of his title of Papa J and loved his grandchildren to the moon and back…especially when he could take them for ice cream and banana splits or to the rodeo. He loved to go boating and fishing, but mostly loved to cook BBQ on his huge Texas grill and feed EVERYONE!  The world will miss him and his brisket for sure!

J is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Skipper; and their two children, Crystal A. Wengel of Wayzata, MN. and Bill Henderson (Erika) of Katy, TX; his brother James Henderson (Diane) of LaPorte, TX; along with 5 grandchildren Madison B. Wengel of San Antonio, TX; Tatiana N. Wengel of Austin, TX; Ashley E. Wengel of Minneapolis, MN; Niles Waller of Katy, TX and Gavin F. Henderson of Katy, TX. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents; Lowry and Morene Henderson; and his sisters; Nelda Andrewartha, Dorothy Reynolds, and Yvonne Feldman; and his beloved son in law, Johnathon D. Wengel.
