John Bennett

November 22, 1943 — September 19, 2016

It was a sunny Monday on September 19, 2016 when John told the cancer that riddle his body to go to hell and he changed his address to heaven. A memorial service will be 2pm held on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. A visitation with the family will be held from 6-8pm on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home.
John’s adventure in life started on 11/22/43 when he was born in Plainfield, NJ; playing soccer for his college in FL, meeting his future wife while in the Air Force in NM; and finally settling in Texas.
But it was in Texas that the adventures really began – He married the woman of his dreams, raised three kids, launched a boat on dry land, ran a boat up on a sand dune while Penni was 5 months pregnant (in the dark of course), learned what southern baked beans were all about, and learned the corrected pronunciation of lantern.
Despite all the degrees, serving in the Air Force for four (4) years, saving lives, starting the neo-natal unit at Seton Hospital in Austin, Texas, being instrumental in the formation of the School of Inhalation Therapy at SW Texas State (which is Texas State University), running a hospital, selling insurance, or helping a customer at Walgreens John will be best remembered for his pranks.
The pranks (which earned him a few nick names that we can’t print) were mild of course – from putting Ben-Gay on a toilet seat, telling his son-in law’s that they could buy beer at the corner drug store, or putting a “For Sale” sign on your car.
John was preceded in death by his parent JL and Patricia Bennett; he was an only child.
John is survived by his wife of 50 years Penni; daughter Jheri (James) Sell of Sealy, Texas; Tamie (Craig) Beckner of Moody, Tx; Trey (Candace) of Amarillo, Texas. Grandchildren include Kyle Castic of Houston, Tx; Nicole (Dillin) Yanulis of Tulsa, Ok; Kaylynn Beckner of Moody, TX; and Paris, Rylee, and TJ of Amarillo, Texas. John was blessed with one great-grand son Elijah Paul Yanulis of Tulsa, OK.
In lieu of flowers the family as that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Fuzzy Friends of Waco.
