Joe was born to James and Esther Birdwell on March 25, 1929 in Austin, TX. He grew up in the Buda, San Marcos, Baffin Bay and Austin areas. His special home was in Indianola, near Port Lavaca, after he retired in 1991 as print shop foreman for the Texas Department of Highways, and in 2000 moved to a hilltop near Cranfills Gap. Joe was a member and deacon of the Brentwood Church of Christ in Austin. He wore many hats: he was a retired First Sargent, US Army Active and Reserves, a lifelong printer and had his own print shop before moving to TxDot. He was a security guard and then the first harbor master for the Point Comfort-Port Lavaca harbor. He was a passionate patriot and loved his politics, hunting and the out of doors. His wishes were to be cremated and ashes scattered over Matagorda Bay, his beloved “front yard” at Indianola by the LaSalle Monument.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his older son, Glenn Howard, in 2013 and step-son Madison T Poston in 2001.
Joe is survived by his wife of 24 years, Alba Lynn (Abby) Streight. They were married February 16, 1991. He is survived by brother, Arthur Nolan Birdwell and wife, Becky of Clifton; and a sister Shirley Johnson and husband John of Lockhart. He is also survived by his step-daughter Robin Poston Tomchesson and husband Tony of Valley Mills; son Dale Birdwell of Round Rock; daughters Conni Robinett and husband David of Abilene, Terri Beck and husband Jim of South Padre Island; and daughter-in-law Jeri Birdwell of Cedar Park, all of Texas; eleven grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, and several close cousins and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the St. Olaf Rock Church Restoration Fund, Cranfills Gap TX 76637.
Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren, and the coffee bunch at the Gap Feed Store.
