Lorena, Texas

Jerry David Capps, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, in McGregor, Texas. Born on January 24, 1954, in Gilmer, Texas, Jerry was known for his quiet demeanor and strong moral character. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his family and community. Throughout his life, Jerry faced numerous health challenges, including a brave battle with brain surgery in the 1980s that ultimately led to his development of dementia. His strength as a warrior and his resilience throughout these trials are testaments to his character, earning him the profound respect and admiration of those who knew him.

He was a proud graduate of Gilmer High School in 1972 and furthered his education with a certification as a Master Machinist at Lone Star Steel in Daingerfield, Texas, and an Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering from TSTI in Waco, Texas. Jerry spent his career as a mechanical engineer in the aeronautical department at L3, where he made significant contributions to his field before retiring.

Jerry’s personality shone through in his relationships, characterized by deep connections and heartfelt devotion. He gave his heart to the Lord at a young age and served Him throughout his life. His beautiful singing voice often graced gatherings, particularly when sharing his favorite old hymns. As the son of a carpenter, Jerry built three homes for his family, showcasing his extraordinary talent in woodworking. He created beautiful furniture, as well as custom pieces such as dominoes and flooring, passing on his love for woodwork to his son, Eric.

Beyond his professional accomplishments and hobbies, Jerry had a passion for gardening and enjoyed raising pigeons, doves, and chickens, inventing his own chicken tractor and dove cove that exemplified his inventive spirit. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his enjoyment of watching westerns and listening to hymns.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, La Juana Capps; children, D'Nina Dancer and husband Brad, Eric Capps and wife Tricia; and granddaughter, Kaitlyn Capps. He is also remembered by his siblings, Linda Chamness and husband Ricky, Terry Capps and wife Angie; as well as nieces and nephews who cherished their time with him.
