Dr. James E. McGregor, 73, of Waco, passed away on September 24, 2014 after a brief battle with cancer. The visitation will be from 10:00am-12:00pm on Saturday, October 4, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home.
Jim was born March 27, 1941 in Bryan, Texas to parents Walter and Georgia (Davis) McGregor. He graduated from Brazosport H.S. in 1959. He attended Texas A & M University from 1959 – 1962, and was then admitted to the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry after three years of undergraduate studies. He obtained his D.D.S degree in 1965. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps from 1966-1968. He obtained his master’s degree in pediatric dentistry in 1970. He practiced pediatric dentistry in Waco from 1970 until retiring in 2011.
Dr. McGregor was active in numerous professional organizations, including the Central Texas Dental Society, the Texas Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He served as President of the Texas Society of Dentistry for Children, the Texas Pedodontic Association and The Southwestern Society of Pedodontists.
Jim enjoyed spending time on his ranch in Hill County. He was an avid skeet shooter, hunter and fisherman. He served as President of the Waco Gun Club and a board member of the Texas Skeet Shooters Association. He enjoyed photography, spending time with his family and traveling with his wife. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and also a Shriner.
He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Scott and Georgia Lee McGregor.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sara Cynthia McGregor; son James E. McGregor Jr. , and wife Angie; daughter Jill McGregor Smith, and husband Jim; granddaughters Morgan McGregor and Gracie and Lanie Smith; sisters Tylene Edmiston and husband Bill and Linda Kesler and husband Gary; brother-in-law Tom Thurman and wife Debbie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Walter S. McGregor Endowed Scholarship Fund at Texas A&M University, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas 77840. This scholarship was endowed by Jim McGregor in honor of his father to benefit medical and dental students. Donations may also be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Waco Skeet & Trap Club.
