Iris Jean Bell, 81, of Hewitt passed away on Sunday, July 18th surrounded by family and close friends at her home in Waco, Texas. Funeral Services will be 2PM Wednesday July 21, 2010 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 6 to 8PM Tuesday July 20, 2010 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home.
Iris was born on November 10, 1928 in Bushton (Coles County), Illinois as the 13th of 15 children to Clem and Jessie Coartney. After her mother’s death in 1931, she was raised in the Baptist orphanage in Carmi, Illinois.
She served in the Women’s Army Corps from 1953 until 1959 and met her husband to be in Germany.
She married Robert E. Bell on July 3, 1960, in Tacoma, Washington and served faithfully as a loving wife and homemaker until Robert’s passing in 1984.
After Robert’s death, she worked at Command Aire in McGregor until her retirement in 1994. She enjoyed her work and the many friends she met at work.
She enjoyed watching her grandchildren both in Austin and Waco. She loved watching sports and followed every move of the Baylor Lady Bears both as a fan and a season ticket holder.
She is survived by Rodney W. and Bobbette Bell of Salado, Texas; Patricia L. and Dean David of Austin, Texas; and Donna K. and Felix Glass of Waco, Texas. Surviving grandchildren are Kendall Bell, Courtney David, Ryan David, Regan David, Mallory Glass, Morgan Glass, and McKenna Glass. Surviving siblings include Willis “Bill” Coartney of Alpine, California; Maridean Barton of Coal City, Illinois; Betty Sanders of Paw Paw, Michigan, and Donald Coartney of Prescott Valley, Arizona.
Family is requesting memorials be sent to Friends for Life of Waco.
