Hershell L. Curtis, 94, of Woodway, passed away Wednesday, May 21,2014. Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 26, 2014 at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Drive. A private interment will be held at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
Hershell Lee Curtis was born September 3, 1919 in McKinney to Tom and Vera Angel Curtis. Hershell attended Kilgore College where he played football and was given the nickname "The Big Tackle." As an alumnus of Kilgore College, he established the Clyde Lee Players Association, The Hershell Curtis Outstanding Lineman Scholarship and the Hershell Curtis Heart Award. Hershell' s football career did not stop in college as he went on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. Hershell was also a Baylor University graduate, earning his Bachelors of Physical Education. Hershell' s list of hobbies and expertise included serving in the Army where he received the Bronze Star, teaching and coaching high school, Mayor of Northcrest, owning his own business, being a licensed guide in Colorado for Big Game Hunting, avid hunter and fisherman, dog trainer and master griller amongst many other qualities. His love for his family and friends will prevail in his passing; he will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Tom and Vera Curtis; and sisters, Maudie Bell Black and Lou Marsh.
He is survived by his wife, Leona Williams Hall; children, Anita Donaldson and husband, Lane, Billie Reinke and Connie Swiderski and husband, Tommy; step-children, Jimmy Hall and Kathy Studensky and husband, James; sister, Tennie Mae Ireland; brother, James Curtis; many nieces and nephews and the highlight of his life his 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers Claire Lincecum and Lorri Earls and Texas Home Hospice team for their excellent and loving care of our loved one.
