Upon graduation, Herman joined the United States Air Force, and after basic training was transferred to James Connally Air Force Base in Waco. While in the Air Force, Herman met the love of his life, Fran Pederson. They married in 1959 in Waco.

After completing military service, he went to work for Texas Power & Light Company as a lineman in 1962. Herman retired after 30 years of dedicated service as Assistant Superintendent of Distribution in Waxahachie in November 1992. After retirement he volunteered for several organizations, including Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. In 1996, he decided to go back to work driving a school bus for Midway ISD where the wonderful children on his bus affectionately called him “Mr. Herman.” After 16 years, Herman retired again to enjoy his family, friends, working Sudoku puzzles, playing guitar and traveling.

Herman’s pride and joy was his grandson Jordan Schoenstedt.
