Sonny was born on September 30, 1930, in Lubbock, Texas, adopted by Harlin and Maude Barfield from Edna Gladney Adoption Agency in Fort Worth. He graduated from La Vega High School in 1948 and joined the army in 1949. He became a Hospital Corpsman and was sent to the Memphis, Tennessee naval hospital. In 1951 he received his orders and from Camp Pendleton was shipped out to Korea. He was there until 1953 as a Corpsman attached to the Marines.
Following his military service, Sonny worked and attended night school at Baylor University, graduating in 1961 with a BBA. He married Peggy Bowen in 1962. After the closing of L.M. Crow, he started Barfield’s Southwest Sales, an office supply, office furniture, and printing business in 1963. He was still working there the day he died.
Sonny will be remembered for his sense of humor; he loved to make people laugh--family, friends, customers, and strangers. He was a keen fisherman, and especially enjoyed teaching kids how to bait a hook. He also played golf, some shots right-handed, others left-handed. He enthusiastically watched sports and regularly calculated statistics for his favorite teams, also making friendly wagers. He appreciated all kinds of music, particularly the blues and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Dogs were some of his favorite companions.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harlin Barfield, his mother, Maude Barfield, and his first wife, Patsy Brown Barfield.
He is survived by his wife Peggy of 49 years; four children Keith and his wife Ann, Russell and his companion Richard Baehr Jr., Paula Unger and Neal; four grandchildren Jennifer Barfield, Andrew Barfield, Clive Unger, and Camille Unger.
Honorary pallbearers will be William Field Jr., Wesley Field, Renee Martinez, Nicky Field, Paul Field, Tracy Upchurch, Cami Bajer, Wade Bowen, Jill Bowen Goss, Jenna Teakell, and Dylan Teakell.
