Grace Hogan, finished her earthly race and went Home to the Lord on November 19, 2023, in Moody, Texas, at the age of 65. Grace was born on January 14, 1958, in Franklin, NJ, to the late John and Grace DeVries. She was preceded in death by her parents and her father-in-law, Norman Hogan. “Amazing Grace” was a ray of sunshine, spreading laughter and love wherever she went. She was a master of mischief, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Grace had a personality that could outshine the sun. She radiated joy and had a heart overflowing with love for the Lord and for everyone she met. With her quick wit and unpredictable sense of humor, you never knew what she was going to say next. Grace's smile could light up a room, and her laughter was more contagious than a bad case of the giggles. She had the incredible ability to make strangers feel like lifelong friends, and her cards, letters, and words of encouragement were like a warm hug from heaven. Grace was a prayer warrior and found solace in spending time with the Lord daily. She made cherished friendships everywhere she lived.
Grace was born and raised in New Jersey before moving to Michigan with her family when she was 15. She discovered she enjoyed doing people's hair, so upon graduating from High School, Grace enrolled in and completed cosmetology school. Always ready for an adventure, after visiting California with a friend, she decided to move there! She moved in 1980 and opened her own salon, The Barbouri, in 1981. Shortly after, Grace met her husband Mark Hogan and they were married in 1983. Together, they built a home and raised their two children to know and love the Lord. She was one of her children's biggest (and loudest) cheerleaders in their youth and into adulthood. Grace always put her family before her profession and embodied the Proverbs 31 woman. Her home was filled with love, laughter, food, fun, and the joy of the Lord.
Grace loved her profession but being a cosmetologist was more than a job for Grace; it was a ministry. Through her salon, Grace created a sanctuary where clients became cherished friends. Grace's hands were guided by a higher purpose, as she shared her love and care with each person who sat in her chair. Grace's salon wasn't just a place for hair makeovers; it was a haven where friendships blossomed, and hairdos turned into heart-to-heart conversations. She listened attentively, providing light hearted conversation and laughter or comfort and solace when needed, all the while skillfully transforming hair into works of art. Her salon was a staple in the community where everyone was welcome.
After 40 years in her profession, Grace retired in 2021. Shortly after, she and her husband Mark relocated to their “promised land” in Moody, TX. There, they became actively involved in their local church and Shepherd's Heart of Lorena food pantry. Grace also joined the local garden club and Lorena Fire Auxiliary, embracing her love for gardening and giving back to her community.
Grace's hands were not only skilled in hairstyling but also in the art of gardening, hosting, and nourishing others. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth and hospitality, where family, friends, and even strangers found solace and comfort, laughter and joy. She was known for her vibrant yard art and her green thumb. Her pantry and freezers were always stocked with delicious food, ready to be shared with guests, friends, and family. She found joy in giving away the bounty from her garden and sharing her love for food with others.
A celebration of Grace's life will be held on Sunday, December 3rd, at 2 pm at FBC Lorena in Lorena, TX, followed by a reception at the church. In honor of Grace's giving spirit, contributions can be made to The Shepherd's Heart Lorena food pantry, in lieu of floral arrangements. Donations can be made at https://www.shepherdsheartoflorena.org.
Grace's memory will forever live on in the hearts of her loved ones. She is survived by her partner-in-crime and loving husband, Mark Hogan; her children, Cheryse (Josiah) Skiles and Jordan (Amanda) Hogan; her grandchildren, Jenae Skiles, Evan Skiles, Moriah Skiles, and Noah Hogan; her siblings, Betty (John) Bouwman, Fran (Ron) DeYoung, Ken (Lorri) DeVries, Mike (Barb) DeVries; her mother-in-law, Lillian Hogan; her brothers-in-law, Joel (Patti) Hogan, Dave (Faith) Hogan, Les (Natti) Hogan, Mike (Kristin) Hogan, Jim (Kristi) Hogan, Jeff Hogan, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
