Glonda (Claiborne) Counts, 92, of Waco went to her heavenly home on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014. Visitation will be held from 10-12, Saturday, Sept. 20, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Dr.
Glonda was born April 17, 1922, to Fleetwood Asa and Montra Marie Claiborne on a farm near Greenville, Texas. She graduated from East Texas State Teachers’ College in Commerce, TX with a Masters of Arts. She taught Spanish at Carter Riverside in Ft. Worth for many of her years of teaching. She married Sherman Edward Counts on Dec. 22, 1946, and they enjoyed over 63 years of marriage and ministry together before he preceded her in death 4 years ago.
Glonda loved Spanish and the Spanish-speaking people and volunteered as an ESL teacher at the Baptist Centers of Houston for over 20 years. Sherman in retirement joined her through several years of fruitful ministry at the Centers. Glonda also enjoyed helping in the Children’s programs at First Baptist Woodway, whether in distributing Sunday School supplies or working at the Fall Festival for over 25 years.
She is survived by daughter, Montra Weaver and husband, Alan; two granddaughters, Courtney Masters and husband, K.C. and great grandchild Kenzi Marie, Alyssa Farrar and husband, Jason, and one grandson, Alex, as well as nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Jesus Christ was central in Glonda’s life and she served Him and modeled His character faithfully. Also important to her were spending time with family at home or on vacations. Glonda was a “people person” whose broad smile and twinkling eyes conveyed the positive, fun and joyful soul she was. She always considered the needs of others first and was quick to listen and encourage. She will be greatly missed.
Those wishing to honor her memory may contribute to the HOPE ESL ministry of Highland Baptist Church of Waco or to the Children’s Camp Scholarship fund at First Baptist Woodway.
