George H. Henningsen, 95, of Waco passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at a local nursing center. Memorial services will be 3 p.m., Saturday, January 21, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Drive.
George was born December 31, 1921 to Harry and Frances (Whalen) Henningsen in Wynndot, Mchigan. He was the oldest of five children. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to the Chicago suburb of Lombard. After graduating high school, George joined the Navy and served from 1942 to 1945. During his service, George sang in a band on Samar Island in the Philippines to entertain the troops. Following his service, George attended and graduated from DePaul University. He began his work in the insurance field and worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield and finally for American Amicable Insurance in Waco. He retired from American Amicable after 25 years in 1986.
Music was a big love in his life. He also loved golfing, starting as a caddy as a teenager and continued to play all his life. George was an avid study of history and loved to read.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gilbert Henningsen; and sister, Andrea Wagner.
George is survived by his children, Holly Billings and husband, James, Sigrid Whitford and dog, Sophie Jean, Ingrid High, Geoff Henningsen and wife, Paula; grandchildren, James Billings and wife, Christine, Robin Ameny and husband, Aaron, Alejo Billings and wife, Allison, Eric Billings and wife, Sarah, Adam Dooley and wife, Robyn, Heidi Kempton and husband, Thomas, Hillary Henningsen; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Glenn Henningsen and Gerald Henningsen; and close dear friend, Jean Pinner.
