George Mont Cross, 83, passed peacefully from this life on Thursday June 27, 2013 at his home in Crawford, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Monday July 1, at 1 pm at the Mausoleum at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be held on Sunday July 2, from 5pm to 7pm at Grace Gardens Funeral Home in Waco.
George was born in Waco Texas on November 2, 1930 to Joseph Orr Cross and Dorothy Belle Soames. He graduated from Waco High School in 1949 and attended Texas A&M and Baylor University before settling into multiple partnerships in the commercial carpet and drapery industry. In the summer of 1967 he met Frenchie Matthews, after a long courtship the couple married on January 11, 1974 solidifying their commitment to each other and uniting their two families. Later, George went to work for Gerry Rogers Home Builders until he eventually started his own company, Cen-Tex Insulation. After his retirement he worked part time for Specialty Properties in Waco. In 1993 he joined the Crawford Masonic lodge #585 where he would meet some of the best friends he would ever have. Following the example of his father, who was Master of the Waco Masonic lodge, George went on to become the Master of the Crawford lodge in 2001. His son Mike is the current Master of the Crawford lodge and soon his grandson Christopher will inherit the title, culminating in four generations of Master Masons. George is also a charter member of Tranquility Lodge 2000. George was an avid fisherman and took great pleasure in going on fishing trips with his sons, son-in-law and numerous friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph O. Cross; sister, Dorothy Joe Langford; son Bryan Evans Cross.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Frenchie Cross; children, Mike Matthews and wife Susan, Monty Cross and wife Verna, Debi Smith and husband David, Ross Cross and wife Carolyn; grandchildren, Mandolin Shannon and Husband Jeri, Lani Rust and husband Mac, Jason Mont Cross, Crystal Golding and husband Michael, Meredith Mont Cockrell and husband Clint, Christopher Matthews, Sable Khoury and husband Brian; six great-grandchildren; his loving niece Laura Langford; and his most dedicated companion Whiskers.
Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Keith Boles and Providence Hospice for their loving care.
