Fred Collins

Fredrik Laurence Collins, beloved husband and honored father, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012 at the age of 78. Services are 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12th, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. Visitation will also be 6 to 8 P.M. on Friday, May 11, also at Grace Gardens.

Fred was born in Hastings, Nebraska on July 30, 1933 to Melvin and Elizabeth Collins. He married his high school sweetheart, Dolores Herrick on July 30, 1955, in Hastings, Nebraska, and they shared 57 years of marriage. He was active in Lions Club, church projects, helping friends, and enjoying his family.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Elizabeth Collins, his sister Connie Cochran and her husband Jim, and a grandson Kyle Collins.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores "Dutch", his brother Richard and wife Linda of Omaha, Nebraska, and three sons, Jon Collins of Waco, Scot Collins of China Spring, and Rob Collins of Aiken, SC, and two daughter’s-in-law, Liz Collins of China Spring, and Mandy Collins of Aiken, SC. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; Bob, Brooks, and Seth Collins of Thornton, Colorado; Tucker, Tanner, and Brock Collins, of China Spring; Jana Talley and Bridgette Kemper, also of Waco; and Haley and Mason Collins of Aiken, South Carolina; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew and Carson Talley, and Ryland and Sterling Kemper.

He earned degrees in Geological and Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1957 and 1961. He started his career working for the Colorado Public Service in Denver. Then he transitioned to the Dow Chemical Company working at the Rocky Flats Plant manufacturing nuclear weapons components for the DOE. With Dow he moved his family from Colorado to Michigan, and then to Texas where he ended his engineering career with the Apache Oil & Gas Company. His transition into retirement also included a short career as a fifth grade teacher with the San Antonio public school system. In 1996 he and Dolores realized their dream upon retirement and moved to a house on the shores of Inks Lake in the Texas Hill Country where they resided for 12 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Fred’s name to the Highland Lakes United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1005, Buchanan Dam, TX 78609.
