Edward Burns

January 31, 1944 — July 25, 2018

Edward “Ned” Hughes Burns, age 74, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Ned was born in 1944
in Shreveport, LA to parents Edward and Vera (Gilson) Burns. He was raised, alongside his brother
Frank, in Houston, TX. Ned graduated from Marion High School in 1962. He attended Texas A&M
University and Northwestern Louisiana State University, where he obtained both a Bachelor’s and
Master’s degree in education. He was commissioned in the US Army, as a Second Lieutenant and later
served one tour of duty in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1969 (rank of
Captain), he began his long and distinguished career as a public school educator. During this time he
married Doris Giebel and began raising their children. He held many positions throughout his education
career including: math teacher, school principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent of
Schools. Ned served as the Superintendent of Schools for Dalhart ISD from 1988 to 2002. He then went
on to serve as the Superintendent of Schools for Teague ISD from 2002 to 2013. Through his career, he
made it his mission to provide an excellent level of education for the children within communities that
he served.
Being a lifelong teacher and educator, Ned continued serving others after his retirement. He served as
a Board Member of the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children and was a volunteer at
Providence Hospital in Waco. Ned was also an avid fisherman and hunter and instilled his love of the
outdoors in his children. He loved vacationing at the river with his brother and childhood friends.
Throughout his retirement, Ned loved spending time with Doris, his children, and grandchildren, who he
always put first.
Ned was preceded in death by his mother and father and grandson, Gus Burns. He is survived by his
brother Frank Burns; wife Doris; his daughter Catherine and husband David and their children, Kirk, Kyra, and Alexa; their son Jeremy and his wife Jill and their son Jackson; their son Marc his wife Alicia and their children Granger
and Clara; and Jacob and his wife Meghan and their son Knox.
