Earl Lee Stabeno, 93, of Woodway, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2020. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, with Pastor Heath Kirkwood of First Baptist Church of Lorena officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m, Friday, May 22, also at Grace Gardens, 8220 Woodway Drive.
Earl was born on February 8, 1927 to Louis and Matilda Stabeno. His parents were farmers and he often told the story of handpicking cotton at the age of 4. Upon his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the army on April 10, 1945 and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. Due to a jeep accident caused by a hit and run head on collision, he was granted an honorable discharge on October 22, 1946. He spent 120 days in the hospital recovering from his injuries. But all wasn’t lost, this is where he saw the love of his life and made it his mission to meet her. Earl and Gloria were married on February 4, 1948. They shared 66 years together before her passing in 2014.
Earl enjoyed many hobbies, some of which included boating, grilling, gardening, and watching sports. Golf, however, was his true passion. He played so much that his wife finally took up the sport so she could spend more time with him. He even achieved every golfer’s dream of making a hole in one on a par 3.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Henry Stabeno, son, Rodney Stabeno, and loving wife, Gloria Stabeno. Earl is survived by his daughter Lisa Tyus and husband, Glynn Tyus and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.
