Dorothy Lee, a longtime McGregor resident, passed away peacefully this week at the age of 90. Private memorial services will be at First United Methodist Church McGregor with inurnment at McGregor Cemetery with Rev. Victoria Gebert officiating.
Mrs. Lee was born in Penelope, Texas; the daughter of the late Ben Clarence and Bessie Pearl (McGilvray) Mann. At an early age, she moved with the family to McGregor where she was a graduate of McGregor High School. She furthered her education at a cosmetology school in Waco. For several years, she was employed at DorVe Beauty Shop in McGregor as a beautician. In the early sixties, she married Bert Lee. After forty-eight years of marriage, he preceded her in death in 2010.
A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Dorothy was an active church member as a children’s Sunday School teacher, choir member, and Women’s Society member. In the early 1970’s, she was instrumental in starting the church’s Chrismon Tree. She made sure that as many people as possible had a part in making the Chrismons from the children making the star tree topper, to the church members decorating them. To this day, the Chrismons are lovingly used, packed, and unpacked each year. Throughout her life, Dorothy enjoyed being a mother, sewing, baking, and making quilts.
Preceding her in death were her brothers, Gerald Mann and Galen Mann, and a sister, Norma Cortner.
Survivors include her daughter, Sarah Blair and husband Arnold; her son, Richard Lee; her sister, Bobbie Smith; her sister-in-law, Eugenia Simons; niece, Aida Sapp and husband Rick along with other nieces nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
The family commends the staff of Skilled Care of Mexia for taking wonderful care of her for the last few years. In addition, she received wonderful hospice care provided by Reliant Hospice from nurses Judy Angel and Kristi Bounds.
For those desiring, the family has suggested First United Methodist Church, 500 S. Madison St. McGregor, for memorial contributions. A guest book is offered at http/www.gracegardensfh.com. Through this site, you are encouraged to leave a tribute or fond memory about Dorothy.
