Donald R Davis, 86, peacefully departed his worldly home in Hewitt, Texas and went home to be with the LORD on July 7, 2023. He had resided with family in Hewitt, TX since 2019.
Don was born in Michigan and grew up by humble means, joining the Air Force in 1954. He played volleyball, traveling the world competing against other countries. Towards the end of his military career, he started working as a pin chaser/mechanic at a military bowling alley in Turkey. Upon returning to the states, he continued work as a part-time pin chaser/mechanic at civilian and military bowling allies in Florida and California. After retirement, he worked at Crossroads bowling alley in Williams, CA. That is where he eventually met the love of his life, Sylvia. While dating and after marriage, when he was not with her, he could be found at the Arbuckle Golf Course. As a golf club member, he was well known for his golfing and custom red golf cart. Since golf was a passion, he taught Sylvia so he could be with her at the same time. Don and Sylvia worked alongside each other in property management for a few years and then he did maintenance for Valley West convalescent home before his second and final retirement in 2001. He was Dad to many of his younger co-workers there and was a highlight of the day to quite a few residents.
After moving to Texas Don, Sylvia and the family started attending Top Hand Cowboy Church. Don enjoyed the rustic church, worship, and the message. He especially loved singing “Jesus Loves Me” as the closing song. Even as his memory declined, he remembered that song.
Don loved sight-seeing on the random drives with Sylvia. He would comment on God’s beautiful creation; the landscapes, lake views, clouds, and sunsets. He also loved his pet family members and they loved him back by napping on him, several at a time.
Don is survived by his wife of 38 years, Sylvia, sister Andrea Wilson, sons Scott (Maria) and Daryl (Kathy), his step-daughters Lana (Mark) Bento and Jolene (Mark) Larsen, stepsons Greg, James and Jerry Dodd, numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was a father to all of them. He was preceded in death by his mother, Velma, brother Richard Davis, sisters Donna (Louie) Smith and Irlene Randell.
His funny demeanor, sense of humor and his gentle caring spirit will be dearly missed.
As he would often sing, “And I said to myself, what a wonderful day this is…”
