Don Carnes, 74, of McGregor, passed away, Wednesday, February 15, 2017. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, February 19, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Drive. Interment will follow at McGregor Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home.
Don was born March 8, 1942 to Carey and Ina Carnes in Winnsboro. Don was a student band director at Winnsboro High School. He attended Tyler Junior College studying surveying. He then graduated from The University of Texas, majoring in engineering. After college, Don served the US Army of Engineers in Germany. Don loved people and spending time fishing, hunting, and riding horses.He served many years as Director of Public Works in several cities in Texas, retiring from the City of McGregor in 2010. He loved to travel, ride steam engine trains, smoke brisket for his family and friends, and tell tales of his days as a long haul truck driver.Don's family was his greatest joy. He never missed a chance to gather his children and siblings around a home cooked meal. He was a loving, sharing, and joyful man's man.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Wanda Carnes; and brother, William Carey Carnes.
Don is survived by his wife, Monyene Carnes; brothers, Roy Carnes and wife, Sandra, Robert Carnes and wife, Sandra, Kenny Carnes and wife, Susie, and Michael Carnes and wife, Crystal; children, Jerry Don Carnes and wife, Jennifer, Jason Carnes, Stephen Carnes, and James Carnes and wife, Sarah; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
