Delta Simon Sawyer, a 49 year resident of Golinda, Texas, passed from this life on October 28, 2022 at her home, at age 83, after a short battle with aggressive metastatic breast cancer. Her childhood friend of over 70 years and her youngest daughter were holding her hands when she returned to the arms of her beloved husband of 64 years, Lindsey “Paul” Sawyer Jr., who went to his heavenly home on November 19, 2021.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, at OakCrest funeral home, 4520 Bosque Blvd in Waco, Texas. Graveside service is at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, at Wortham Bend Cemetery, 614 Oak Grove Loop in China Spring, Texas.
Delta was born in Abbeville, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana on March 27, 1939. She was the second child and eldest daughter of Galvay Simon and Elvie (Vaughan) Simon, and sister of three siblings, who called her Delta Lou. The Simon family moved to Orange, Texas, where she met Paul (L.P.) through her best friend Lois, when she was only 13 years old. Paul told Lois the next day "I'm gonna marry that girl" but Delta was not at all interested in "that old man" although he was only 17 years old. Paul joined the Marine Corps "to give Delta time to grow up" and he came home at age 22 to marry his 18 year old first and only love, his true soulmate, on Nov 1, 1957.
Delta was a teenage carhop at Zack’s in Orange, then hosted Stanley, Tupperware, Saladmaster parties and later worked in network marketing and land sales for over 40 years. She loved helping others and was not shy about sharing opportunities when she found them. She loved organic gardening and was an amazing cook; she never met a tool she couldn’t figure out, she built her own kitchen cabinets, assembled beehives, and simply did whatever had to be done. She devoted her life to her family and was a true treasure to them.
After decades of being known as Delta Lou, she learned that she was Delta Sue on her birth certificate, but she was Mom to her 3 children and was lovingly called MawMaw by her 6 grandsons and her 4 great-grands, who she treasured as Favorite Grandson #1, #2, etc. Delta was a faithful member of the Church of Christ for 59 years, and she aspired to be a good example to her family and to everyone who knew her.
Delta is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings; Huey Wade Simon, Elwin Simon, and Della (Simon) Montondon. Left to cherish her memories are her three children; Tony Wade Sawyer, Venus Lynn Sawyer Ogden, Cathy Jo Sawyer Almanza; grandsons, Gerald Ray Allen “Jerry” Ogden, Jr., Lindsey Wayne Allen Ogden, Vance Paul Zachariah Allen Ogden, Carl Ray Almanza, Jr, Travis Colton Lafon Sawyer, Cary Joe Sawyer Almanza; great grandchildren, Olivia Faith Ogden, Evelyn Grace Ogden, Amelia Rose Ogden, and Gerald Ray Allen “Trey” Ogden, III; numerous nieces and nephews; and a multitude of extended family and friends.
