Della Mae Adams, 91, of Waco, joined her husband on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. The family will have a graveside service that will be scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, July 10, 2015 at Rosemound Cemetery.
Della was born February 27, 1924, in Brownwood, Texas. Her father, George Riley Dodson, and her mother, Myrtle Richardson Dodson, lived in nearby Comanche, Texas, which was her childhood home.
As a teenager, Della and her mother relocated to Waco a short time before World War II. Eventually, Della went to work at Pipkin Drug Store where she happened to meet her husband, John T. Adams. They married in 1942 and not long after, John was drafted into the army as part of the combat infantry engineers in the Pacific Theater of the War. He was wounded by a land mine and finally sent home to see his son, Johnny, for the first time.
Della and John, set up house in North Waco at 1930 Lyle and her John went to work at General Tired Plant and Della kept house and began raising their kids, John, Mike and Mark.
Their summers were filled with baseball and vacations to Galveston, Corpus Christi, and Port Bolivar for swimming and fishing. Della rarely fished but she cooked all that the family caught and it was good. Her sons shared one small bedroom in that house on Lyle but they never wanted for anything they really needed. Della and John were the epitome of humble, loving, unselfish, and caring parents. They never sat down with their children to instill such character traits such as honesty, integrity, fairness and hard work. They simply lived that life for themselves and their children learned by example.
After the death of her John in 1981, Della became a school crossing guard and was so loved by the children she watched over. Some of them actually gave her Christmas presents. Later, she went to work at Baylor in the Department of Residence Life as a night dorm mother. As was her nature, she soon became a mother to all her coeds. To this day, she still receives letters, postcards and Christmas letters from as far away as California, London, England and Sweden from " her girls".
Della is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dr. Dale Dodson of Northfield, Minnesota, and Staff Sergeant retired, Raymond Dodson of Hemet, California and her husband, John T. Adams of Waco.
She is survived by her 26lb. cat, " Baby", and all the rest of her many friends, sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
