Dell Shields

October 18, 1939 — November 4, 2024

Dell Marie (Van Cleve) Shields of Woodway, TX passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, with her devoted husband, Garvis, of 64 years by her side.

Dell was born in Houston, TX to E.C. and Major Van Cleve on October 18, 1939. Shortly thereafter they moved to the family ranch in Zavala County where she attended school in Crystal City. She completed her education at Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston. After graduation, she attended Sam Houston State. At the beginning of her sophomore year, she went on a blind date with her future husband. The two were married on December 26, 1959. Their marriage was blessed with four children that they raised in Mexia, Austin, Brenham, and Brady, TX. Nearing retirement, the move was made to Woodway in 1993 to be closer to family.

She professed a belief in Jesus early in life and was a long time member of Crestview Church of Christ. She volunteered with Hospice and the local Alzheimer’s Association until she was diagnosed with it herself in 2012. She especially enjoyed plants, flowers, and birds. You could usually find her with her hands in the dirt or refilling the bird feeders or bath.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Caswell Van Cleve, her son, Garvis Preston, Jr. (Pres), and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by her husband, Garvis Preston Shields, son Deryl Shields, daughter Deborah Damuth (Steve), son Joel Shields (Marsha), grandchildren Deryl, Steven, Sarah, McKenzie, Jake Preston, Caleb, Anabeth, and seven great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 10 from 4-6 pm at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Monday, November 11 in the chapel at Grace Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to act.alz.org.
