After a courageous battle with cancer, David Bryan Jones, 60, of Waco, passed from this earth to his Heavenly home while surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. He didn’t lose his battle, but won his reward of peace, happiness, and an eternal life in the presence of God. There will be a memorial service, with military honors, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 10:00am with visitation afterwards.
Bryan was born in Palestine, Texas on April 18, 1961, to Margaret Ann (Farris) Jones and Henry L. Jones, Jr. Shortly afterwards the family moved to Huntsville, Texas. Growing up in Huntsville, Bryan enjoyed playing Little League baseball, and later, participating in the high school band. After graduating high school, he attended SHSU where he earned a degree in Criminal Justice. He made many friends that he cared for but remained lifelong friends with, and was especially close to, a small group of classmates that he has kept in constant contact with. He loved them like brothers and recently said about them, “It’s hard to find really good friends, but I somehow managed to find all the best ones”.
In life, Bryan had many accomplishments and friends, and, those who have had the pleasure of meeting him, know what a kind, hardworking, and generous person he was. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a strong man of faith with an unwavering trust and love for God. For a good portion of his life, he was a single dad, raising four strong-willed children that meant the world to him, without the help of child support.
Bryan served his country in the Army and National Guard for ten years and was honorably discharged in 1998 as an officer, with a service-connected disability. He also worked within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) in Huntsville, Texas for 17 years, while also teaching at Houston Community College for four years in the Law Enforcement Training Center, before moving to Waco, Texas in 2003 to be near his family. He most recently worked for the City of Waco from 2005-2019, as a Civil Engineer Inspector.
He enjoyed several hobbies, but his favorites were spending time with his children and family, especially his 4 grandchildren whom he adored. He loved gardening, watching the Astros play ball, playing dominoes with family and friends, and spending time with his group of childhood best friends.
Bryan was preceded in death by his father, Henry L. Jones, Jr., his stepmother, RuthAnn Jones, his brother-in-law, Larry Ordener, his 4 grandparents, and 2 uncles.
His legacy lives on with his children: Kelly Jones, Austin Jones, Heather Jones Reyna (and husband, Jonathan Reyna) and Jordan Jones; and his 4 grandchildren: Carter Jones, and, Phoenix, Zara, and Eden Reyna.
He is survived by his mother, Margaret Ann Gregory, his brother, Stephen Jones (and wife Karen Ni-Jones), sisters Rhonda (Jones) Ordener and Shari (Jones) Korioth, numerous nieces and nephews, 2 aunts and several cousins.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Gentle Transitions Hospice for their kind and attentive care of Bryan during his last days.
