Dan Moore, 77, of Waco, passed away Monday, March 2, 2015. Visitation will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. A private family committal will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Wortham Cemetery with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Wortham. Following the service, visitation with the family will follow at the Church in Wortham.
Dan was born on July 3, 1937 on the family farm in Shanks, Texas, to Joe Traynham and Martha Faye Moore. He graduated Teague High School in 1954 and married Emma Grace Richardson October 12, 1956. Dan began working at Wortham Metal Works in that year as a sheet metal worker. He bought a 50% interest in the business in 1962, partnering with Emma’s brother, W.O. Richardson. In 1968 the business was incorporated and in 1979 Dan purchased the remaining stock and changed the name to Wortham Air Conditioning & Sheetmetal, Inc. In later years the name was shortened to Wortham Air Conditioning, Inc. and it continues to operate in Wortham.
Dan was a devout Christian and was ordained as a deacon in the First Baptist Church, Wortham, on March 1, 1964. He served as deacon there for 44 years as well as on numerous committees, taught Sunday School for decades and often led music in worship services. In 2008 he moved to Waco to be near his family after retirement. There, he joined Parkview Baptist Church where he attended faithfully until his death. Dan served on the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, in Dallas, from 1980-1986, served on the Wortham I.S.D. Board of Trustees for over ten years, and served on the Freestone County Appraisal Review Board for over ten years as well.
Dan is fondly remembered by his eight grandchildren as “Gran Dan” and is widely known for his work ethic, honesty, patriotism, business acumen, sense of justice and fairness to all (especially the down trodden), generosity, kindness and respect for others, including those who differed with him. Dan’s faith wasn’t something he practiced. It became who he was, and he will be missed by his family, friends and long time customers through the years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Grace Moore; son, Mark Moore; brother, Joe Moore; and sister, Peggy Brown.
Dan is survived by his son, Todd Moore and wife Kelly, of Waco; daughter-in-law, Kathy Moore, of Waco; grandchildren, Rachel Moore, Devion Moore, Traynham Moore, Dan’a Moore, Leland Moore, Garrett Moore, Austin Moore, and Gracie Moore; great granddaughter, Peyton Moore; sisters, Donna Lusk and husband Ronnie, of Lufkin, and Elna Rose and husband David, of Corsicana; and sister-in-law, Darlene Moore, of Cedar Hill.
