Cohen Bass

Cohen A. Bass, 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 27,2014.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on December 6 at the First Baptist Church in McGregor, Texas,
with Reverend Terry Johnston officiating. A brief visitation will follow the services in the Reception Hall
at the Church.
Cohen was born on May 14, 1917, to Samuel and Clementine Bass in Oglesby, Texas. In 1920,
the family moved to McGregor where Cohen lived his entire life. He graduated from McGregor High
School. On November 10 of 1947, he married Mary Sue Davis, a union that endured for 67 years. In
1943, he became one of the first city mail carriers for McGregor, a position he held for the next thirty
years until his retirement in 1973. In 1974, he began a second career as a salesman for Gilmore & Davis
Furniture where he made many new friends and gained a second family. He retired from Gilmore &
Davis in 1997. His retirement years were devoted to spending time with his wife, children, and
grandchildren and landscaping his yard.
Cohen enjoyed dancing, especially Texas Swing, as well as playing dominoes with friends and
family. He loved gardening and landscaping was constantly working in his yard. He also loved to take
scenic drives across central Texas and was often happiest when on the road.
Cohen is survived by his wife, Mary Sue; son, Jeff D. Bass and wife Margery of Woodway, TX;
daughter, Mary Katherine Johnston and husband Michael of Ft. Worth, TX; grandchildren, Thomas J.
Bass of Woodway, Megan R. Bass of Houston, TX, Elizabeth Johnston Smid and husband Matthew, and
M. Phillip Johnston of Ft. Worth, TX; great-grandson, Andrew J. Smid, also of Ft. Worth.
