Clara Richards

Clara May Richards, age 91 of Waco, died Tuesday September 22, 2009 at a local hospital. Graveside services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Friday, September 25, 2009 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Jim Johnson officiating. No set time for visitation.

Clara May was born on December 7, 1917 in Beeville, Texas to the late Roberta and Lonnie Borroum. She attended high school at Westmoreland Boarding School in San Antonio and graduated with a BA in education from Baylor University in 1938. She was a member of the Waco Junior League and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Clara May served on the board of directors for Oakwood Cemetery, was a founding director of Brazos Forum, member of the Waco Historic Foundation, a docent at Earle Harrison, and served on various committees for the Waco Cotton Palace. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waco and a member of the Presbyterian Women.

Clara May married her college sweetheart, Charles B. Richards on December 23, 1938 and they were both lifelong residents of Waco. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Benjamin Richards, Sr. and her son, Charles Benjamin Richards, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Jones, Andy Brashier, Ben Richards and Newman Richards. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Burck, Dudley Haas, Terry Hight, Edgar Jablonowski, David George, David Lacy, Tom Lacy, Walter Lacy, Heyward Taylor, Don Howe, Russell Trippet, Walker Harmon, Dr. Ross Reagan, Dr. John Speckmiear, Dr. Scott Jones and Dr. Todd Moffatt.

Clara May is survived by one daughter, Sally Brashier of Waco; one son, Allan Richards and wife Jody of Horseshoe Bay; a sister, Sara Lehman of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Charlie Jones, Andy Brashier, Rachel Brashier Eustis and husband Wes, Newman Richards and wife Brooke, Julie Richards, Ben Richards and wife Leigh, Terry Quinn and husband Graham and Claire Richards; and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Penny Burck and Susan Richards.

The family would like to thank all of the staff on the 4th floor of St. Catherines Center, Sandra, Delyn, Joseph, Anna, Trenia, Robbie and especially Mary Garcia, who loved and took care of Clara May, and to Dr. Jim Johnson for all his love and support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Austin Ave., Waco, Texas 76701.
