Charles Duty

March 20, 1948 — July 14, 2011

Charles Warren Duty was born March 20, 1948 in Checotah, Oklahoma and died July 14, 2011 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 63. He was the son of Mitchell and Alta Duty of Checotah, Oklahoma. He graduated Checotah High School where he was quarterback for the football team. He graduated Oklahoma State University from the school of Hotel/Restaurant Management in 1972. He proudly served six years in the National Guard during that time. Charlie was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity where he met many of his life-long friends. He enjoyed a very successful career as a professional club manager applying exceptional knowledge of the business and his amazing people skills. He took great pride in the members of the clubs knowing they were valued and he treated each employee with respect and professional nurturing. Through his gentle guidance and mentorship many young managers, tennis and golf pros, and food and beverage directors have achieved their professional goals. Charlie started his career at Brookhaven Country Club 1972-1974. He was then hired by Club Corp of America to manage Lost Creek Country Club in Austin 1975-1978. He was the general manager at Austin Country Club from 1979-1984. He then took the general manager job at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Oklahoma from 1984-1993. Some of the great joys of his life were hosting the US Amateur golf tournament in 1984 and the PGA tournament in 1988 at Oak Tree; where he met his life-long friend, Hugh Edgmon, golf professional. He then went to work for the Country Club of Louisiana in 1993. He moved to Dallas in 1995 where his last and current position was General Manager at Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas, Texas. He considered this membership and staff his "family" and was eternally grateful and proud to be part of such a great group of people. His family can never fully express the love and gratitude they have for the staff of Bent Tree. Charlie has held the designation of Certified Club Manager for thirty years. He is an active member of CMA Texas Chapter which provides education, job opportunities, and fund raising for students. Charlie was an active member of Brighter Orange, an organization that raises funds for scholarships for deserving students who wish to attend Oklahoma State University.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents and first granddaughter, O'Neal Scrivner. He will get to hold his "Little Sweetie" forever now.

Charlie is survived by his wife of thirty years, Diana. He is also survived by his loving and amazing daughter, Jennifer and husband Joel Scrivner; two beautiful granddaughters, Sydney and Blakely who are the light of his life; his son, Chad Duty who has been the greatest source of joy and pride any father could hope for; his brother, Harold Duty and wife Betty of Oklahoma City; and his sister, Phyllis Drake and husband Charles of Stillwater, Oklahoma all of whom he adored. He leaves many loving nieces and nephews, an aunt, uncle, and cousins. His dog "Howdy" has been his precious companion for 10 years.

Charlie has been blessed to have had so many close friends who have meant the world to him, especially his cousin, Chuck Hensley. One of the last things he said to his wife was that he had absolutely no regrets about his life because of all these people. All of us who knew and loved him treasured his sense of humor, integrity, and dedication to his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the OSU Dallas Brighter Orange Scholarship Fund through which an endowed scholarship in Charlie's name will be established. Checks should be made payable to the OSU foundation specifying the scholar ship honoring Charlie Duty and mailed to P.O. Box 1749, Stillwater, OK 74076.
