Candace Jean Hurd, affectionately known as Candy, departed this world on January 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy woven with threads of passion, dedication, and an indomitable spirit. Born on May 21, 1945, in the serene landscapes of Coryell County, Texas, she grew into a strong-willed woman whose impact resonated profoundly through her roles as an educator, advocate, and cherished family member.

Her academic journey began at La Vega High School, from which she graduated with enthusiasm and ambition. Candy went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Baylor University, followed by a master's degree at Tarleton State University, equipping her with the knowledge and skills that would serve as the foundation for her distinguished career. For an impressive 33 years, Candy devoted her life to teaching at University Junior High and High School, initially in coaching girl’s sports and later in History. Her influence was particularly felt as she was a trailblazer in promoting junior high girl’s sports, advocating fiercely for opportunities and inclusivity in athletics. Among her proudest accomplishments was the establishment of the Academic Decathlon for Waco Independent School District, as well as initiating intramural sports for girls in junior high, testaments to her unwavering commitment to nurturing the athletes and scholars of tomorrow.

Beyond her professional achievements, Candy was a vibrant individual whose personality sparkled with wit and loyalty. She embraced a wide array of interests, finding joy in shopping, gardening, and painting, while also enjoying the social camaraderie of bowling and bridge with friends. Her resilience in the face of challenges was matched only by her capacity for love and her deep-seated loyalty to those she held dear.

Candy is survived by her loving husband, David; her daughter, Donna Groppel; her sister, Jackie Whitford and her husband Geoff; a niece, Anna Brown; and a multitude of friends and former students whose lives she touched and inspired throughout her years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harreylee and Wilburn “Pinee” Wallace; and her brother, Steven Wallace, who welcomed her into eternal peace. Although her physical presence will be dearly missed, her spirit will continue to invigorate the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege to know her. Candace Jean Hurd’s legacy, marked by her commitment to education and her passion for empowering others, will forever remain a cherished memory in the annals of Waco and beyond.
