Bruce Ira Romig passed away peacefully on March 27, 2016 at the age of 81.
Bruce was born December 21, 1934 in Topeka, Kansas, to parents Robert E. Romig and Bernice Sanders Romig. He was the youngest of four boys, and in those early years in Topeka he enjoyed life on the farm with brothers Ted, Dale and Phillip. The family moved to Hutchinson, Kansas where Bruce graduated from high school. Bruce recalled his days in Hutchinson as rather uneventful as his older brothers were all serving in WWII. He was active in the First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir, and developed a love for the opera and symphony that remained throughout his lifetime.
Bruce attended Washburn University in Topeka until 1954 when he entered the Air Force, and after serving for four years he resumed his studies at Washburn before transferring to University of Wisconsin at Madison. He graduated from Wisconsin in 1960 and embarked on a 37 year career with State Farm Insurance. Bruce began as an agent in Miami, Florida, later moved into management and met the love of his life, Lois Elaine Winecoff in 1963. Bruce and Lois married March 7, 1964 in Florida, and soon had their hands full with 3 young boys. Following a brief move to Illinois Bruce and his family settled in Austin, Texas in 1975.
Bruce and his family made many great friends, both personal and business in the 40+ years that followed in Austin. He and Lois enjoyed fabulous travels over the years, from Hawaii to Europe to Tahiti, and they had a special fondness for Treasure Cay in the Bahamas. Bruce also had a passion for golf, and with his 3 boys had the makings of a perfect foursome. Although his handicap never reached single digits, he had the uncanny ability to regularly sink a 60 foot putt or a 40 yard chip shot, one of which was captured on video during a Legends of Golf Pro-am.
Bruce is survived by his sons: Bart and his wife Julie, Todd and his wife, Gwen, and Scott Romig; grandchildren, Madison, Taylor, Jenna, Katie and Megan; numerous nieces and a nephew.
