Betty Ann Slaughter, age 86, passed away peacefully in the early morning of October 21, 2024, at her home in Crawford, Texas. She was lovingly known as wife, momma, Meme, Bet or Betty. There will forever be a void in our hearts that can never be replaced.
On January 12, 1938, in Andrews, Texas, Addie and Charles Travis were blessed with their greatest gift, Betty Ann. At an early age, she moved with her parents to Baytown, Texas. The summer before her second-grade school year, Betty Ann and her parents moved “back home” to Crawford where her father opened up Travis Chevrolet. Betty Ann was an only child but shared a brother – sister like relationship with her uncle and classmate, Don Travis. She graduated from Crawford High School in 1956 and attended Baylor University.
On March 17, 1960, Betty Ann married the love of her life, Donnie Slaughter, with whom she shared 46 years of marriage. Together, they raised two sons, Tracy and Jeff.
Betty Ann was a devoted employee of Crawford ISD for an incredible 46 years, only retiring in 2020 due to impairing health issues. She made a lasting impact on the many lives she touched, especially with her famous, “Well, Bless Your Heart” or “How are ya?” However, her greatest joy and devotion came from her role as "Meme" to her beloved grandsons, Travis and Tye. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for them, and she truly believed they walked on water.
A lifelong member of Crawford United Methodist Church, Betty Ann's faith and dedication to her community were constants throughout her life. Having a servant’s heart, her cup was always full and never empty which is why she was always so positive and everyone’s biggest cheerleader. Betty Ann loved to bake and had a special touch with Buttermilk “Brownies,” Banana Nut Bread, and Chocolate and Buttermilk Pies.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Addie Travis, grandparents Charlie and Mary Lou Richardson, Henry and Lottie Travis, her husband Donnie, and her son Tracy.
Betty Ann is survived by her son Jeff and his wife, Angie, whom she loved like a daughter, her grandsons Travis and friend Tanya Willingham, and Tye and friend Maria Marquez. She is also survived by uncle Don Travis, cousins Carolyn Brazil, Steve Ledbetter, LuAnn McKee, Pat Troseth, Larry Travis, Suzi Travis, Debbie Henson, Lynn Brooks, David Travis, Donna Travis Cox, Linda Brown, and Cheryl Daubs. Betty had many cherished relationships throughout her life, including her sister-like friends Boo Lynch and Gwen Robinett. Other special friends included Evelyn Sutter, Carol Badgett, Delbert Kelm, Dusty Lynch, Buffy Byer and her sons Judson and Jackson, Lyndon Love, and John, Katie, Beckam, & Parks Weldon along with her life-long best friends Dixie Fulp and Jo Ann Engelbrecht Hicks.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Maydee Rosario, “the good doctor,” for the loving care she provided to their Momma & Meme over the past seven and a half years.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Crawford Cemetery, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Betty Ann will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In leu of food or flowers, the family request that you make a charitable donation to the Lord’s Acre Fund at the Crawford United Methodist Church or the Crawford Ambulance Association.
