Betty Fluet

April 10, 1952 — August 1, 2016

Betty Fluet, 64 of Woodway, passed away peacefully at home on August 1, 2016. Visitation will be at Grace Gardens Funeral Home from 5:30-7:30pm on Friday, August 5 with a rosary to follow. The funeral mass will be at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church on Saturday at 1pm.

Betty was one of eight born to her loving parents. She grew up in a wonderful Catholic family and attended Catholic schools. In her youth, Betty loved basketball and excelled in this sport winning several MVP’s in high school.

After graduating from Texas Tech with honors in deaf education, Betty taught preschool hearing impaired children. She met the love of her life in the halls of Sam Houston Elementary in Corsicana, where she was teaching. Within a year Betty and Norm married. A few years later, they had a wonderful daughter, Tiffany, and five years after that their son, Ryan, was born. Betty became a stay-at-home mother, which she loved. She enjoyed participation in all aspects of raising her children. She coached several of Tiffany’s basketball teams. She spent countless hours volunteering in school and PTA activities, which earned her the PTA Lifetime Achievement Award from Midway ISD. She also volunteered at St Catherine’s for many years. Her love of sports continued at Texas Tech and beyond. She became a big Baylor fan and attended numerous Baylor sporting events. Her first love was the women’s basketball team. For many years, she was a member of the Tipoff Club.

Betty and Norm enjoyed 40 years of marital bliss. They traveled extensively, and enjoyed many family trips including camping in their tent camper. They especially enjoyed family trips to the mountains, to various national parks, to Disney World, and went on numerous cruises. One of Betty’s favorite sayings was, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.” Despite a shortened life, she had numerous breath-away experiences.

For Betty, motherhood extended into grandmotherhood. She loved her grandchildren, Sawyer and McKenzie, and embraced being a “mama” as much as health permitted. She especially enjoyed the Family Disney Cruise in 2013 and the Family Disney World Trip in 2015. What memories! She loved Sawyer and McKenzie’s hugs and kisses.

A special thanks to all her dedicated friends who spent time with her during her declining years. Though, at times, she was unable to respond to them, she was comforted by their loving presence. Betty took a great deal of strength from her faith, family, and friends. She immensely enjoyed spending time with family and friends. The family extends special thanks to Mary Wright, Sherrell Huff, Jean Goff, and Snookie Torres who provided loving care during her last years of life.

Betty had a sweet gentle smile. Even during her challenging health issues she would be seen smiling. While petite, she was one tough lady; she never complained about her declining quality of life.

Memorials may be made to: Children’s Leukemia Research Foundation, Talitha Koum Waco, Waco Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Caritas of Waco; Heart of Texas Parkinson’s Association, or Waco Center for Youth.
